We rate Chargebee 4.2/5. Comprehensive subscription billing, making it especially useful for startups and solopreneurs. The main tradeoff: expensive at scale (% of revenue). The free tier softens this considerably.

About Chargebee

Chargebee sits on top of your payment processor (Stripe, Braintree, etc.) and adds the subscription management layer that processors don't natively handle well.

It manages the entire subscription lifecycle: signups, upgrades, downgrades, pauses, cancellations, renewals, and failed payment recovery (dunning). Pricing experiments let you A/B test different plans and prices.

Revenue recognition (ASC 606) automates the accounting complexity that subscription businesses face. Invoice generation, tax calculation, and multi-currency support are built in.

The customer self-service portal lets subscribers manage their own plans, payment methods, and invoices without contacting support.

Startup plan is free for the first $250K in cumulative revenue. Performance plan starts at $599/month. Enterprise is custom.

For SaaS founders, Chargebee prevents you from building subscription billing logic from scratch. The free startup tier is generous enough to last through early growth.

Limitations: pricing takes a percentage of revenue at higher tiers, the platform is complex for simple subscription needs, full configuration requires significant setup time, and Stripe's native billing may be sufficient for basic use cases.
